It was fifty years ago, on September 2nd 1967, after resigning from the Van Jacket Inc., Gen Tarumi, the founder of Seilin & Co., set sail for California on the passenger-cargo ship “Brazil Maru” from the Osanbashi Pier in Yokohama, passing through Hawaii on the way.
After reaching the port of San Pedro, California, he traveled north to Los Angeles and continued up to San Francisco. Upon reaching the Haight Ashbury district, he came upon buses painted with flowers, bare-footed long-haired youth, and the scent of incense in the air. Everyone seemed to have their own individual style and the unmistakable aura of freedom. He had arrived at the dawn of the Hippie era.
